Nicklin Transit Packaging has joined forces with DS Smith, an international paper company and leading global supplier of fibre-based packaging solutions to help transform facilities at the YHA (Youth Hostel Association) National Forest hostel in Leicestershire.
Whilst the initial brief focused on constructing new timber garden furniture using wooden pallets supplied by Nicklin, both teams carried out interior improvements by creating a series of bespoke corrugated cardboard features that are designed to embody the natural environment of the surrounding area.
DS Smith has previously supported the YHA hostel through staff volunteer days, and the company welcomed the opportunity to assist with these most recent improvements to the facility.
David Nicklin, Chief Operating Officer of Nicklin Transit Packaging, added: “Our partnership with DS Smith has always been built on collaboration and innovation, so it was great to come together for a project with such a meaningful outcome.
“We first explored using transit packaging-based designs to create bespoke garden furniture, but the standard material doesn’t suit the environment, the finish is too rough and the longevity limited without treatment. By working with our supply chain partner KDM International, we were able to source high-quality garden furniture options that better met the needs of the site.
“The final result is a real testament to what can be achieved through partnership – and to the adaptability of timber and cardboard, whatever the application.”
Sarah Bell, from DS Smith, added: “The Youth Hostel Association provides a valuable community asset. We were really pleased to support improvements at the National Forest hostel in Leicestershire, and it is on the doorstep of our packaging facility in Hinckley.
“What started out as an idea to replace the garden furniture at the site has grown into a wider opportunity, and it has been brilliant to join forces with the YHA and Nicklin to make this vision a reality. We are proud of the results, and it is exciting to see the positive impact our combined efforts are having on this hostel in the local community.”
Heidi Rutley, manager at YHA National Forest: “We’re so thankful to both DS Smith and Nicklin Transit Packaging. The team who came to build the furniture were wonderful – polite, professional and full of enthusiasm.
“The new outdoor seating is a brilliant addition, and the bespoke cardboard furniture inside the hostel is both imaginative, and practical. It’s truly impressive what’s been created.”
