At Nicklin we believe that looking after our workforce is ultimately looking after our business. Providing the right working environment and focusing on the health and wellbeing of every colleague goes hand in hand with our aspirations to deliver the very best service for our customers and recognises that everybody who works at Nicklin plays a critical role in its success.
Wellbeing
The physical and mental wellbeing of our colleagues at Nicklin is our number one priority.
Beyond physical health, the recent pandemic and the corresponding lockdowns illuminated the importance of mental wellness in the workplace with nearly three quarters of visits to GPs regarding challenges with mental health.
At Nicklin we have developed processes so that we can listen to and understand any concerns that colleagues may have and then we are able to make decisions that align with their needs.
To support this we work with an occupational health nurse who completes health surveillance checks for all colleagues with all new starters having an initial health check within their first six months.
During these appointments colleagues are encouraged to speak to the nurse about any issues they may have and she will then signpost them to other services where necessary of offer them general wellbeing advice.
Health and safety
Every year almost 40 million working days are lost in the UK due to work related ill health and non-fatal workplace injuries and that is why we never cut any corners when it comes to health and safety.
A happy and healthy workforce is undoubtedly a more productive one and we take our duty of care incredibly seriously, so we have a zero-accident vision at Nicklin that states that nobody out to be injured as a result of an accident at work.
The implementation of best practice is rigorously enforced across the shopfloor to minimise risk and this work is supported by an annual health and safety week where all colleagues take part in activities aimed at reinforcing our zero-accident vision.
Communication is an important part of delivering this vision and so we work closely with workplace reps to ensure that there is continuous and valuable dialogue across the business, which includes having representatives from all areas of the business on our health and safety committee.
Pay and conditions
At Nicklin we pay above the minimum wage and have a clearly defined incremental pay scale with a four-stage progression that enables every colleague on the shopfloor the opportunity to develop within the business.
Every colleague at Nicklin is provided with the surety of a permanent contract and with that comes entry into the company pension scheme, life assurance and above statutory holiday provision of 22 days as well as Bank Holidays and a Christmas shutdown so that everybody is able to enjoy the holidays with their families.
We also provide a gift card for every colleague as a Christmas bonus and there is also a management-led bonus scheme for those that deliver exceptional performance.
Creating the right working environment
Creating a working environment where people want to come and work hard every day is a fundamental part of how Nicklin has grown to become the UK’s leading independent business in the pallet and packaging sector.
As well as ensuring the health and well-being of all colleagues and providing competitive pay and conditions, we are committed to ensuring the overall environment is positive, welcoming and productive.
There are staff canteens available to all and we also provide free parking for all colleagues so that nobody has to spend more than they need to when it comes to getting to work.
We are also incredibly proud of the diversity of our workforce, with colleagues from all over the world who all work fantastically together with a shared commitment to maintaining Nicklin’s reputation for quality, both in terms of the products we produce and the services we provide.
As a business we are continuing to grow and always looking for great people across all areas of our business so if you would be interested in exploring opportunities to work with us then we would love to hear from you.
