All of our customers rely on efficient, cost-effective, and reliable packaging and logistics to keep their operations running smoothly.
Whether shipping heavy industrial components, fragile glass products, or high-volume goods, the right packaging is crucial – not just for protecting their products, but for optimising costs, minimising waste, and ensuring supply chain continuity.
The true cost of poor packaging
Poorly designed or unsuitable packaging can have a ripple effect throughout your operations, impacting in a number of costly ways. These include:
- Product damage: Damaged goods lead to returns, replacements and unhappy customers. It is estimated that product damage in transit accounts for approximately 5% of all shipped goods, costing businesses billions each year.
- Increased costs: Fragile, bulky o non-optimised packaging can inflate shipping costs and waste valuable warehouse space. Overpacking also unnecessarily increases material and fuel costs.
- Supply chain disruption: When packaging fails, it can cause delays and downtime – two things every logistics operation strives to avoid.
- Reputational damage: If customers regularly receive damaged goods, it will reflect poorly in your brand, eroding trust and loyalty over time.
The commercial benefits of well-designed packaging
Investing in reliable, efficient packaging can deliver tangible business benefits across the board:
- Product protection
Whether it’s heavy machinery or delicate components, our timber packaging is engineered to withstand the rigours of handling, storage, and long-distance transport. Our product range includes standard or bespoke corrugated cases, wooden cases and crates, timber-framed panel cases and glass stillages, manufactured to your exact requirements. We also have the capability to machine an array of timber components in multiple dimensions, ensuring that whatever the product, we can create a packaging solution to ensure it reaches its destination in the optimum condition.
- Cost efficiency
When the financial cost of freight is determined by weight and volume, a properly engineered packaging solution has a major impact on the bottom line. At Nicklin we use the latest cutting-edge technology to ensure that all our packaging is fully optimised, while still providing the required protective qualities. Using Finite Element Analysis allows us to simulate the effects of real-world forces on packaging, pinpointing areas of stress while eliminating areas within the packaging design that contain surplus material.
- Operational efficiency
Standardised, stackable and easy-to-handle packaging speeds up the loading and unloading process, reduces labour costs and ensures smoother logistics, while custom-fit solutions also maximise space usage in containers and warehouses. We also work with our customers to explore opportunities to implement their own volume reduction strategies, further reducing their need for unnecessary packaging while supporting wider operational efficiency.
- Sustainability
Timber is one of the most sustainable packaging materials available – it’s reusable, repairable and recyclable. At Nicklin all of our products are manufactured using raw materials sourced from responsibly managed forests that are Chain of Custody approved. Well designed and efficient packaging also lowers transportation costs, actively supporting our customers lower their own carbon footprint.
- Compliance and safety
Through our commitment to achieving important industry certifications, we can provide reassurance to our stakeholders that all our products meet sustainable standards, industry regulations and international shipping standards. Our Environmental Management System certification means that we are committed to continually monitoring and improving our overall environmental performance, while we also have chain of custody certification so that all our timber can be fully traced to source. We were also the first timber pallet and packaging manufacturer in the UK to be registered under the UK Wood Packaging Material Marking Programme with regards to the supply of ISPM15 compliant timber packaging, which is packaging that has been treated to remove invasive forestry pests so as to protect the eco-system of its destination country.

Whatever the sector, our customers trust us to supply packaging that protects their products – and their bottom line. By working closely with clients to understand their needs, we design timber packaging that performs reliably, efficiently, and sustainably.
